What 511 Systems Actually Are
511 is the national phone number for traffic and travel information in the US and Canada. But behind that phone number is a network of data systems operated by state and provincial departments of transportation (DOTs).
These systems exist to help DOTs manage traffic flow and keep drivers informed. They're fed by:
- Road sensors embedded in pavement that detect vehicle speeds and volumes

Road Conditions
Some DOTs report current road surface conditions: dry, wet, snow-covered, icy. This is especially valuable in winter when road conditions change rapidly and vary by location.
Winter Operations
Plow locations, salting operations, chain requirements. Several states provide real-time plow tracking, showing where crews are actively working. For mountain passes, this can indicate whether roads are being maintained during a storm.
Special Events
Planned events that affect traffic: stadium events, parades, road races. Not all DOTs publish this, but when they do, it helps you avoid unexpected congestion.
Restrictions

The Coverage Reality

Good Coverage
States like California (Caltrans), New York, Florida, and Washington have robust public APIs. Ontario's 511 system is comprehensive. These areas have detailed incident data, construction schedules, and often camera feeds.
Partial Coverage
Many states publish some data but not all. You might see major incidents and construction but not road conditions or plow locations.
Limited Coverage
Some states don't have public APIs, or their data is limited to major highways only. In these areas, we rely more heavily on weather forecasts and can't provide real-time incident information.

Freshness and Reliability
One challenge with 511 data is staleness. An accident gets reported, cleared, but remains in the system for hours. A construction project ends but isn't removed from the database for days.
