How to Check Road Conditions Before a Trip: All Your Options

A practical guide to every method for checking driving conditions--weather apps, 511 sites, traffic cameras, radio, and more. Pros, cons, and when to use each.

Before a road trip, most people check the weather at their destination. But weather at point A and point B doesn't tell you much about the 300 miles in between. Here's a complete guide to every method for checking road conditions--and when each one is useful.

1. Weather Apps (The Weather Channel, Weather.com, Apple Weather)

The most common approach: check the forecast for your starting city and destination.

What you get

  • Temperature and precipitation forecasts

  • Severe weather alerts for specific areas

What you don't get

  • Conditions along your route between cities
  • Weather timed to when you'll be at each point

Best for

Quick checks when your trip is short or weather is clearly good everywhere. Also useful for getting a general sense of regional patterns.

The gap

A 5-hour drive might cross multiple weather zones. Your origin and destination could both be clear while a storm sits in the middle. Weather apps won't show you that unless you manually check every city along the way.

2. State 511 Websites and Apps

Every US state and Canadian province operates a 511 system for traffic and road information. Most have websites and apps.

What you get

  • Real-time traffic incidents (accidents, closures, debris)
  • Construction zones and work schedules
  • Road conditions (dry, wet, snow-covered, icy)
  • Traffic camera feeds
  • Chain requirements for mountain passes
  • Plow locations (in some states)

What you don't get

  • Information outside that state's borders
  • Weather forecasts (just current conditions)
  • Route-specific filtering--you see everything

Best for

Checking conditions right before you leave, especially in winter. Excellent for mountain passes and areas with variable conditions.

The gap

If your trip crosses multiple states, you need to check multiple 511 sites. Each has a different interface, different data formats, and different levels of detail. A drive from Denver to Salt Lake City means checking Colorado's 511, Utah's 511, and possibly Wyoming's if you're going that way.

Finding your state's 511

Search "[your state] 511" or "[your state] road conditions." Most are at urls like 511.org, cotrip.org (Colorado), or similar. The quality varies significantly by state.

3. Google Maps and Waze

The apps most people use for navigation also show traffic information.

What you get

  • Real-time traffic conditions (speed, congestion)
  • Incident reports from other users
  • Estimated travel time with current traffic
  • Alternate route suggestions

What you don't get

  • Future conditions--only shows traffic right now
  • Weather along the route
  • Official incident data (relies on user reports)
  • Road surface conditions (ice, snow coverage)

Best for

Active navigation while driving. Also useful for checking current traffic before a short trip where conditions won't change much.

The gap

If you're planning a trip for tomorrow or next Saturday, Google Maps can't tell you what traffic will be like then. It shows current conditions only. For trips more than an hour away, what you see now isn't what you'll encounter.

4. TV and Radio Traffic Reports

Local news stations report traffic conditions, especially during morning and evening commute times.

What you get

  • Major incidents in your metro area
  • Weather radar interpretation from meteorologists
  • Local knowledge about problem areas

What you don't get

  • Conditions outside your metro area
  • On-demand information--you have to wait for the report
  • Details about specific routes

Best for

Commuters in metro areas. Local TV meteorologists often know their region's quirks--which bridges ice first, which valleys get fog.

The gap

Road trips that leave your metro area aren't covered. And you can't check TV on your schedule--you have to catch the traffic segment when it airs.

5. Traffic Cameras Directly

Many DOTs publish traffic camera feeds online. You can find cameras on 511 sites or by searching "[highway name] traffic cameras."

What you get

  • Actual visual conditions right now
  • Verification of what forecasts and reports say
  • Real-time snow accumulation, visibility, traffic flow

What you don't get

  • Conditions between camera locations
  • Future predictions
  • Easy access--cameras are scattered across multiple sites

Best for

Verifying specific locations you're worried about. Mountain passes, bridges, and areas known for weather-related problems.

The gap

Finding cameras along your specific route means visiting multiple websites and knowing which cameras to check. Cameras are also static images or low-quality video--you see one moment, not trends.

6. Calling Ahead

The old-fashioned method: call someone at your destination and ask how the weather is.

What you get

  • Human judgment about local conditions
  • Information about road conditions they've experienced
  • "It's been snowing all morning" vs "forecast says snow"

What you don't get

  • Conditions between where they are and where you are
  • Information about incidents or construction
  • Always-available access

Best for

When you need ground truth about destination conditions, especially in areas with unreliable forecasts.

The gap

Your contact only knows what's happening where they are. If the bad weather is in the middle of your route--where neither of you is--neither of you knows about it.

7. Just Going and Hoping

The default for many trips: leave and deal with whatever you encounter.

What you get

  • No pre-trip research time
  • Flexibility to adapt as you go

What you don't get

  • Ability to avoid problems by timing or routing
  • Advance warning of closures or major delays
  • Peace of mind

Best for

Short trips in good weather, or when you're flexible about arrival time.

The gap

You might drive into a storm that started an hour before you left--one you could have avoided by waiting or leaving earlier. You might hit a closure that was announced that morning. For long trips or adverse weather, this approach has real consequences.

What's Actually Hard About This

The core problem isn't that information doesn't exist--it's scattered and not tailored to your trip:

  • Multiple sources: Weather from one app, traffic from another, cameras from a third, 511 data from each state you cross
  • No route filtering: 511 sites show all incidents in the state, not just ones on your route
  • No timing: Weather apps show conditions at fixed times, not "what will conditions be when I arrive at this point"
  • Manual synthesis: You have to mentally combine all this information and figure out what it means for your specific trip

For a 2-hour drive in clear weather, this manual process is fine. For a 5-hour drive through multiple states with variable weather, it becomes substantial work.

A Practical Approach

If you want to be thorough using traditional methods, here's a reasonable process:

  1. Day before: Check weather forecasts for origin, destination, and 1-2 midpoints along your route. Look at radar to see if any systems are moving through.
  2. Morning of: Check 511 sites for each state you'll cross. Look for closures, construction, and road conditions.
  3. Before leaving: Check a few traffic cameras at known problem areas (mountain passes, bridges, areas prone to fog).
  4. While driving: Use Waze or Google Maps for real-time traffic updates.

This works. It takes time, and you need to know which 511 sites to check and which cameras matter, but it works.

Honestly, it depends on the trip:

There's no single best method. Weather apps are convenient but limited to point forecasts. 511 sites have great data but require manual work across multiple states. Google Maps is excellent for real-time traffic but can't predict tomorrow. Cameras give ground truth but require knowing where to look.
